SKIN ISSUES

                                                         Acne

Hello my name is Briana!

I hope today finds you well. This is a tough one. I have whitehead acne, that manifest in different sizes and do not pop. My dermatologist is unable to keep them from
coming back, and digs them out with special needles. All his little chemicals are
unable to stem the tide. Now I have many tiny ones all over my face.

Please help if you are able. I'm so tired of living with these.
thank you

Susun's Response: acne herbs

Dear Briana,

There are several herbs you could try.

First, spray yarrow tincture on your clean face morning and night. Leave it on. Let it dry on your face. Do not put soap on your face. Cleanse it with witch hazel extract on a washcloth. Use a new spot on the washcloth each time.

Second, take burdock root tincture, 15-20 drops twice a day for at least four months. (do not take capsules, tincture only)

Third, avoid all hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats. If possible use only olive oil and butter.

Last, eat at least a half a cup of yogurt a day for at least six weeks. (best to get plain and add fruit if you want)

Hope this simple remedies can help you.

Fungal infections

Hi Susun,

Thank you for your gifts! I have a request. My friend has a fungal infection
on her thumb, the nail has been lost several times. She was using 'No Miss' fungus
killer. It seemed to work for about a year, nail growing healthy etc. , Now
this fungus is back and nothing seems to work.

I would appreciate any suggestions you could pass along.
Have tried tea tree oil to no avail.
Thank you!

Peace, Rain

Susun's Response: try apple cider vinegar

Dear Rain,

My favorite antifungal remedies include apple cider vinegar. Alone, or with red clover blossoms infused therein.

My guess is that the killer she used worked, but she failed to killl the fungus in her shoes or socks. In order to kill the fungus in those places, wipe out shoes with vinegar and place in the sun to dry. For socks, sheets, towels, rugs (yes the fungus hides in all those places and can stay alive there for years), wash well, wipe or rinse with vinegar and dry in the sun if at all possible. A few days of "hysterical hygiene" should insure that the fungus will get gone and stay gone.

Good luck and Green Blessings, Susun Weed

Rosacea, yarrow tincture

Can one use the tincture of yarrow for rosacea? If so, could it be used daily?
Thanks!! And happy Yule!

Jasmine

Susun's Response: try tincture of burdock seed

Dear Jasmine,

You can spray yarrow tincture on the skin where ever there is a bacterial infection. Daily or even more frequently is fine.

Tincture of burdock seed taken internally seems to be the most effective remedy for getting rid of rosacea though. A dose is about 25-30 drops once a day. You may have to use it for many months to get the best effect.

Rosacea and Acne

First of all, I want to thank you for all your knowledge and help. I bought your book about menopause and I'm translating it to my mother (she doesn't understand English) , I wish your books were available in other languages.

My problem is:

Since I turned 26, I started having bad acne, I went to a dermatologist (it was a mistake) and she prescribed me antibiotics for 2 months. My skin cleared up pretty well  but I got a stubborn yeast infection (the first in my life) . I stopped taking the antibiotics and now my skin is worst than before. I don't know what to do!!! I cleaned up my diet and I'm eating as natural as I can, but nothing helps.

I know that the people that write to you have really serious problems , but I need your help. I don't want to go to the dermatologist again. She also suggested that I take birth control, but I don't think it is good.

Thanks for your advice. God Bless you.
Jane
Also info on an abnormal pap smear

Dear Susun & Justine,

Once again, thanks for all the love & knowledge that I have received from both of you. I know both of you are quite busy with really important stuff.

Before you answer my other email, I have one other question to ask:

About 1 year ago I had an abnormal papsmear, I had colposcopy & biopsies. The result was mild dysphasia and I agree with the Dr. to wait & see. I started taking supplements
(vit A, E, C, zinc, selenium, multivitamins) & taking better care of myself. I went for my follow-up papsmear and it came back normal. . I have been taking some herbs too: echinacea, burdock, astragalus. (not all at the same time!!)

I recently read in your articles that you say that supplements, pills are bad. So I stopped taking them and I'm only taking herbs (tinctures & teas) .

what else can I do to keep my paps normal ?

I love coffee (I'm Brazilian and I drink about 2-3 cups a day) , but I'm, wondering if it can harm my cervix or diminish my immune system.

What else should avoid? What else should I improve in my life style?

thanks a lot! Jane again

Susun's Response:

Jane,

Your problems are just as important to us as anyone else's.

Glad to hear that you are eating a whole foods diet with lots of cooked vegetables, especially cooked greens, and whole grains (no white flour), beans (lentils are great), nuts, and fruit. Getting rid of white sugar is good too. No problem with drinking coffee. You may want to try some nourishing herbal infusions, though. And, do remember to drink lots of water.

Abnormal pap smears are common. It is usually considered nothing to worry about if the next smear is clear. I know many women who have reversed cervical conditions far worse than dysplasia by drinking red clover infusion (for you a quart a week would be sufficient) or burdock tincture ( 25 drops a day is a good dose).

Burdock root is the herb most recommended for women dealing with skin problems, so you have a two in one solution. Do you have my green book Healing Wise? It has lots of info on burdock and lots of recipes. I would think that you would get the best results by eating the root at least once a week, plus taking the tincture daily.

Additionally, buy or make tincture of yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Put it in a small spray bottle and spray directly on your face when it is clean. Do not wash off. Let it dry. Do this in the morning and again at night before bed. It will kill bacteria on your skin.

You may wish to avoid soap and water on your face, as they make most skin conditions worse. Instead, dampen a washcloth with witch hazel (from the drug store) and use that to clean your face. Then spray with yarrow. If there are red areas, try a little jojoba oil, the closest thing to human skin secretions that you can buy.

Hope this helps

Skin problem

Hello,

I am hoping you can help me....I have a rather rare condition called Lichen Sclerosis, I have consulted your books but have not found any information on it. I have had this for about 3 years and have been fairly lucky in that is not nearly as bad as it could be...but I would like to deal with it before it does get bad....this disease is mostly found in women who are post menopausal...I am not, I am 38..

.I have resisted most conventional treatments for this as most are experimental and I am afraid of making it worse...I don't know if I have given you enough information on this...but I am hoping to hear from you.
ps. the symptoms that I have are white patches and itching...some fusing.

Any help you can give would be most appreciated, thank you.

Blessings, Elaine

Susun's Response: help for your skin

Dear Elaine

I have not dealt with anyone with this problem. Could you tell me what has NOT worked for you?

James Duke says a combination of jojoba oil and gotu gola tincture is absolute magic for the skin. I have used jojoba oil with great results for many years. Also find hypericum (St. Joan's/John's wort) oil is fantastic for resolving skin problems when used externally.

Internally, burdock root tincture is considered the gold standard for helping those with skin distress. The effect is slow, but cumulative over many months.

Let me know if any of these help you.

Allergies and Eczema

Dear Susun,

I love your books, and I love your website - I have gotten wonderful help
from them. I do have a question for you about eczema. I have had it
since age 10 - I am now 45. For my early years I used cortisone creams,
and then from twenty to thirty five did not,- trying all sorts of natural
remedies from acupuncture ,homeopathy to herbal creams. Nothing really
worked and I eventually went back to tiny amounts of cortisone cream - I
use it at the first sign of trouble and never let it get out of hand. I
still try various other things - the best so far was a borage oil cream
, but it's not enough.

I come from an allergy family - my mother had eczema, , my daughters have
allergies and asthma - I developed asthma about ten years ago and use a
wonderful herbal remedy when it bothers me.

For about a year now I have been drinking a daily green drink made out of parsley, dandelion greens, whatever other greens are around and all blended up in my Vita-Mix with water ( an amazing machine). Recently I've also been drinking nettle infusion daily and just added oatstraw. I add new things very slowly as I'm very wary of nasty reactions. I've had many in recent years, though not usually from herbs, -I did get a tight feeling in my throat from skullcap)

If you have anything you could suggest for this problem I'd be very
grateful.

One last question, I've read with interest your comments about
combinations of echinacea and goldenseal. I found echinacea useless for
chest infections, which I used to get when I developed asthma. However,
when I tried the ech/goldenseal combo it worked like a charm - at the first hint of
anything I would take it and never had another infection.. I've never
taken it for more than 5-7days. Would I be better to take the goldenseal
alone ?

Many thanks for all your help !

Many blessing,
Maggy

Susun's Response: green blessings/ointments for eczema

Dear Maggie,
If the goldenseal is that effective, I would try using it alone, especially since the echinacea did so little.

Eczema is tricky. Have you tried Hypericum oil or ointment? Because it nourished the nerves it is often useful where other herbs fail. Burdock seed oil also has a mighty reputation for helping clear eczema. So a couple of new things for you to try.

            Re: green blessings/ointments for eczema

Dear Susun,

Many thanks for your reply. I've just done a search for burdock seed oil, and have not been able to locate it. Can you tell me where I can get it ? I take it that this is something that is applied externally ? When I locate it and try it I'll let you know if it works.

many thanks,

Subject: Re: green blessings/ointments for eczema

Ideally, you harvest the seeds and make the oil yourself. Or, you can try to order it from a herbal vendor. There are a bunch of reputable ones listed on our links page. Yes, applied externally. Love,

Help with Ringworm

Dear Susun,

I have been an avid reader of your books for some years now. I thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with me through your books.

I have had ring worm since March of last year. For the longest time I thought it was eczema and treated it as such. I finally went to the doctor and she said it was ringworm. I have been putting tea tree on it (it is by my elbow) but is getting so red now and slightly painful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Several years ago I went and saw you speak about nutrition and herbs in Seattle and I changed by perceptions of health and healthy food irreversibly for the better.

Thank you so much,
Angie

                                   Susun's Response: ringworm help

Dear Angie,

I am not surprised that you are having a reaction to tea tree oil; it is very damaging to the skin. Try this: coat the ringworm with olive oil then sprinkle on some powder of yellow dock root or goldenseal root. Repeat several times a day. Usually kills the fungus in 7-10 days. Good luck.

HPV and Morphea

I would be interested in receiving your monthly newsletter. I have diagnosed with HPV and Morphea. The Dermatologist has been treating the Morphea with Antibiotics, and he really does not know what to do. I have stopped taking the antibiotics because I have gained so much weight.

I also now have the Papaloma virus on my feet. The Dermatologist is having me put wart removal medicine on it every night and lotion 2 to 3 times a day. It is not getting better. I have also been breaking out with little bumps every that itch.

The Doctors have given me Steroids the past 2 times for the itching but the Doctor will not prescribe them again because of the incidents being so close together. I am having Pap Smears every 3 months to make sure they to do get worse. Doctors can't do anything and I am ready for some relief. Can you tell me what might help the breaking out, warts on my feet and my cervix?

Sheryl

Susun's Response: Re: help for you

Dear Sheryl

Sounds like your immune system is not up to the challenges it is facing. There will be some good information on this in the next newsletter (November) and there is a chapter on the subject in my Breast Cancer? Breast Health! book (available at www.wisewomanbookshop.com )

Echinacea tincture is a favorite herb for helping people with lots of infections. Your dose is one drop of tincture of the roots for every two pounds of body weight (or every kilo of weight). The dose can be taken as often as 6 times a day at the beginning. As symptoms remiss, decrease the frequency, but not the size of the dose. You can continue to take echinacea for up to three months.

Tincture of osha root, available at most health food stores, is an excellent remedy instead of cortisone.

I hope you are eating a healthy diet with little or no white flour, white sugar, alcohol, coffee. Also look at the oils you are eating. All vegetable oils (except olive which is a fruit oil really) increase inflammation throughout the body. Further, I would suggest that you stop taking any and all supplelments and use nourishing herbal infusions instead. Information on making them is in all of my books. Nettle infusion would be exceptionally useful for you, but oatstraw and comfrey and red clover would also be helpful. Remember to use them one at a time, not all together. Regular use of rd clover infusion has helped many women with warts on their cervix stay cancer free.

Especially important is her clear discernment of the difference between the gentle Wise Woman way and other so-called "alternative" healing paths with their dualisms and dogma.
